Since the middle of the 19th century, Moss Brothers had been weavers and converters of corduroy and moleskin fabric. About the turn of the century The English Velvet Cord Dyeing Company moved into the district and took over some of the local dyeing firms. Fearing the prospect of a monopoly in the dyeing trade, which could be to their disadvantage, several clothing companies got together along with the largest dyers in the district, Moss Bros.Ltd. with their extensive dye works at Bridgeroyd. Together they formed The English Fustian Manufacturing Company Ltd. on 13th February 1901.

Over the next few decades the EFMC continued to expand and eventually became a vertical operation incorporating Spinning, Weaving, Dyeing, Clothing Manufacture and also Retail outlets. In the early 1980’s due to changes in the demand for Corduroy Moleskin and Fustians and along with the competition from other countries the English Fustian Co were forced into administration with many of the divisions closing down. It was at this time that M Chapmans & Sons who also specialized in Pile Fabrics became associated with Brisbane Moss and Moss Brothers Dyers, and became the current owners in 1983.

It is now over eighty years since James Wilson first started his world famous mintcake at the New York Inn premises in Kendal, where originally other confectionery such as Kendal Butter Tabs and Westmeria Caramel Toffee were made.

Kendal Mint Cake became so popular it was soon decided to concentrate on this product alone. By 1915 it became necessary to move to larger premises in Stricklandgate, where it was also possible to open a sweet shop and small factory.

The factory and shop were completely rebuilt in 1938 and a restaurant opened. Kendal Mint Cake became increasingly popular with tourists in the Lake District as well as climbers and explorers who found that, with its high energy value, Mint cake gave them a delicious and refreshing energy boost.

In 1966 yet another extension and factory were built but due to further demand by 1983 it finally became necessary to move completely to a new 12,000 sq ft factory at Cross Lane, Kendal which is where our premises are still situated today.

Kendal Mint Cake is still made in exactly the same way as it was nearly 100 years ago, stiring the sugar by hand in copper pans to get that magic taste.

The taste of Penrith Fudge is quite unique and elusive to describe as that of a fine wine. Our delicious fudge and toffee is all home made on the premises.

Fudge addicts flock here from all over the world because, until recently, this was the only place to buy it. It's on the left hand side at the bottom of the hill as you come into Penrith. If you find yourself lost it really doesn't matter - Penrith is not large and absolutely everyone knows where the Toffee Shop is.The Toffee Shop was originally opened by the Furnass family just after the First World War and has worked through three families, eventually being owned by Neil and Pat Boustead.

Fudge is made from butter, sugar and milk to a simple recipe and in small batches, so that it cooks evenly and thoroughly. There are always plenty of people to fuss over the 8 brass pans - stirring it when it needs stirring, and checking that it never boils over or catches in the pan. Once cooked, the fudge is poured into cooling trays and then cut by hand into slabs.We should not forget the toffee -made with sugar, butter, syrup or black treacle - it also packs a powerful punch. It is also made by hand and once cooled in trays is broken up with a hammer and the irregularly shaped pieces individually wrapped.

There are hundreds of fudge shops in Britain so what makes this one so different? - It's difficult to describe the sensation of eating the fudge - it's a rich grainy textured fudge like tablet (Scottish fudge) but smoother and not as sweet, so you can eat masses without feeling sick. Lord Lichfield has been quoted as calling it " the best fudge in the world" and endorses this by having regular orders sent.

Half of UK consumers are baffled when it comes to buying ‘British’ and two-thirds (67%) want an official seal of approval to show products made in Britain, while half (52%) think British brands should bring manufacturing back to the UK, according to new research by leading UK cooker manufacturer Stoves.

Staggeringly, half (48%) of Brits surveyed* admitted confusion about which brands could still claim to be made in Britain, with international takeovers and moves towards Far Eastern production all contributing to an increasingly puzzled landscape.

Now in response, UK cooker manufacturer Stoves has teamed up with independent Made in Britain champions, BuyBritish.co.uk, to launch a campaign for increased transparency, asking for a standardised ‘Made In Britain’ marque to be used on British-made products.

With more than a third of people questioned stating they would buy British if it was easier to identify authentic made in Britain products and 55% claiming that supporting UK manufacture and jobs is their main incentive to buy British, Stoves and BuyBritish.co.uk hope the marque will be adopted by the UK manufacturing industry as a whole.

The findings revealed that 36% of people claim to buy British whenever they can, but when probed about the Britishness of some of the UK’s most iconic consumer goods, it is clear that the public is holding on to out-of-date misconceptions as to what brands are still 100% British made.

40% think HP Sauce (Netherlands) is British-made while 43% think the same of Royal Doulton which although designed in the UK is now manufactured in the Far East. Almost a third (32%) rate Dyson as a truly British brand despite production now taking place in Malaysia and almost a quarter (23%) stand by Raleigh when in fact it shifted production to the Far East in 2003.

With 67% of people agreeing that truly British brands should carry a recognised kitemark, Stoves has drafted in the help of the UK’s design undergraduates to create a seal of approval to help consumers in their purchasing choices.

The results of the nationwide competition will be revealed in June 2011 and will see the winning student’s design displayed on Stoves products, marketing material, and website. It will also be available as a download for all UK manufactured brands, with Stoves and BuyBritish.co.uk hoping that businesses large and small will back the campaign.

Denver Hewlett, chief executive of Stoves, said: “There is clearly an appetite out there for made in Britain products but the confusion lies in identifying what products are manufactured in the UK. A standard industry marque would certainly help the public in their purchasing decisions and it is something we intend to use on all of our Made in Britain products as a result of this campaign.”

The campaign is being backed by Shaun Woodward, MP for St Helens the constituency where Stoves’ head office and factory is based. He said: “British manufacture is essential to our economy and has the potential to play a vital role in the UK’s economic recovery. It is fantastic to see a major company such as Stoves take the lead in launching a Made in Britain seal of approval on behalf of the country’s manufacturers. There is clear consumer demand for products and goods made in this country and this campaign will help make that purchasing decision even easier. The development of a Made in Britain seal of approval is an extremely worthwhile initiative and I am delighted to lend my support to this cause.”

In 1887 the country celebrated Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, 50 years as Queen. One in four of the world’s population was a subject of the crown. William Gladstone was a prominent politician when William Turner started a business in Sheffield smelting and refining gold and silver. The company quickly expanded into rolling other metals and manufacturing cutlery. The majority of the company’s early production was supplied to other cutlers for finishing and sale under their own name. In essence, William Turner was the “cutlers’ cutler”.
William Turner founded the company in 1887 with his close friend Mr R.J. Brown. The company was first engaged in the refining and smelting of precious metals. William Turner had close links with the Sheffield community – he was a director of the Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and became Sheffield Lord Mayor elect in 1906 shortly before his death. He was succeeded by his son William Glasier Turner O.B.E, who was also a Director and Chairman of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.
In the early 1930′s the company designed two of the classic Sheffield patterns Jesmond and Harley which are still, to this day, copied worldwide.

Ashbourne was for long a centre of clockmaking. During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries there were about five separate concerns making clocks in the town. The Ashtons, Harlows, Davenports and Ellebys have now passed into history and only the Haycock business remains today. We celebrated our first 150 years in clockmaking in 1976, but in fact the roots of our business go back to 1740 when Joseph Harlow established a clockmaking business in the town

		The Haycock brothers John and Thomas worked with Thomas Harlow grandson of the above Joseph, and took over the business in 1826 which they then proceeded to run in their own name.


	The firm originally carried on business in Compton a part of Ashbourne, but in 1860 built a new works in Station Street. There not only were domestic clocks made but turret clocks and general brass and iron founding as well. Thomas Haycock's son Thomas junior conducted this business until his death in 1906 whereupon this branch of the Haycock clockmakers closed down.

	Church Street Works
			Meanwhile his younger brother William was established in his own business in Church Street and the Market Place having left his brother in about 1865. A move was made to the present Southcliffe works in 1897.



	William Haycock died in 1904 having established a reputation as a capable craftsman and a man of great integrity. The firm still trades under his name and is run by his direct descendants. Both the firms of Thomas Haycock & Son and William Haycock were noted makers of skeleton clocks. They may be considered as representing their finest work from the Victorian era. Many of the original patterns are retained at our works.

The Manchester Weathercoat Company was originally formed in 1978 to provide a manufacturing service to high quality brands such as Burberry, Mulberry, Daks and Aquascutum. From our purpose built factory in Manchester, Lancashire, once the heart of the Industrial Revolution for traditional rainwear, we produce traditional raincoats for both ladies and gents. The production of our trench coat has over 120 separate manufacturing operations to produce the finished article; every single seam is pressed immediately after sewing and seamstresses hand sew the collar making this undoubtedly one of the most labour intensive coats produced today.
