Rays Veldts Boot & Shoe Makers

Each pair of our shoes is often crafted from beginning to end by one craftsperson. The lasts we use are chosen for their comfortable fit, and we can modify a set of existing lasts to an individual’s requirements for problem feet, giving a semi-bespoke fit.
From the initial pattern making to the finished article, the entire process of shoemaking occurs within our workshop, and new designs are continually being developed for production, so we hope you will check back regularly to discover new additions.

Alfred Sargent - Hand Made Shoemakers

In 1815, long before Benjamin Disraeli or William Gladstone had been Prime Minister, before Charles Dickens or Arthur Conan Doyle had written a single word of literature, William Sargent began honing the skills needed to become a master craftsman and shoemaker.  When William began in the trade, shoe making was done completely by hand in what we call today a “cottage industry.”   Within individual houses, groups of men and women performed all the operations of shoemaking: cutting, stitching, lasting and finishing.  William’s son, who was born in 1826 and was also named William, joined him in this cottage industry and learned the craft of shoe making as well.

By the time the second William’s son, Alfred was born in 1857, the industrial age was upon England, and many of the cottage industries had moved into purpose built factories. Shoemakers themselves began utilizing the new tools of manufacturing, and the world changed completely in 1871, when Charles Goodyear patented his welting machine.  The Goodyear welt, as it is now called, is a method of securing the upper and insole of a shoe, as an attach-point for the sole. When this sewing is performed on a Goodyear welting machine, it is a highly repeatable process.  Shoes made in this manner are generally regarded as the highest quality. New tools such as this allowed firms to make footwear in a more organized fashion and on a much larger scale, leading to the creation of many of the world’s most famous shoe-making brands.

In 1899, Alfred, together with his sons, Frank and Harry, set up his own company, Alfred Sargent and Sons, in the town of Rushden Northamptonshire. Sixteen years later, in 1915, Alfred moved to the present site of Portland Road, building a small factory which has been extended over the years.  It was the first single storey factory built in Rushden and also the first to have electricity, a vast improvement from the old gas lighting. These changes not only improved shoe making but also provided much better working conditions for the employees.

During the 1920’s, 1930’s, and 1940’s, the next generation entered the business. Frank’s son Derrick joined the company at a time of tremendous increase in the number of shoe factories in the county of Northamptonshire. The region is now the largest area of Goodyear welted manufactured shoes in the world.

Sole Laying Rough Rounding Sole Stitching

The 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s saw many changes in the structure of the footwear industry. Although exports of footwear increased, so did competition from imports. This changed the development of many factories, and some say it was the beginning of the decline in the footwear industry in Northamptonshire. During this time, the fourth generation of Sargents, Paul and Andrew, joined the business, and the traditional manufacture of footwear was gradually infused with the changing trends and styles of fashion.  Alfred Sargent and Sons had now passed its hundredth year of production, joining an elite group of manufacturers that have achieved such a milestone.

Heel Pinning Edge Trimming Edge Setting

Today, shoe enthusiasts from all over the world have expressed a desire for proper English shoes made in a traditional manner.  Many of the old traditions of finishing that William first used in the early 1800’s have been rediscovered with a modern twist to reflect  today’s style and the quality demands of today's customer.

Sole Painting Hand Polishing Sole Stitching

Today, under that same roof at Portland Road, small groups of master craftsmen take time to select the best calf leathers and suedes, then cut, stitch, last and finish them as generations of Sargents have done for more almost two hundred years.

Nursey of Bungay - Leather and Sheepskin products

There’s been a Nursey of Bungay in Upper Olland Street since 1790. And there’s been a Nursey heading up the firm every year since.
Not every change is a change for the better.
Some things, we’ve discovered, are best left done the way they’ve always been done.
The story of Nursey is one covering 200 years of tradition, experience and uncompromising craftsmanship. Back in 1790, Samuel Nursey opened for business declaring that, first and foremost, he would work with only the finest lambskins. It’s a principle that successive generations of Nurseys saw no reason to divert from, and one which Tim Nursey, the current Managing Director, adheres to to this day.
Of course, 200 years ago, best quality skins could be found within a few miles of Bungay. Now, we have to go further afield. (Toscana skins, for instance, which are selected for their unique softness and the stylish way they drape, come from Spain and Portugal, but we have been known to extend our searches as far afield as Iceland and Australia.)
Once the skins have arrived at our factory, they’re examined the way they always have been. Meticulously. So that they can then be sorted with absolute accuracy, according to colour, texture and weight.
Rather than machine cut them, which is quicker and cheaper, we then hand cut them. Yes, it’s slower. Yes, it’s more expensive. And yes, it results in a better crafted product.
Just as unusually, and just as true to our time-honoured practices, one sewing machinist is responsible for sewing the whole garment. (In most clothing factories today, a machinist only sews part of the garment.)
Finally, choosing the painstaking, time-consuming, and traditional over the modern and cost-effective isn’t down to any nostalgia kick or backward-looking cussedness. We continue this way for one reason and one reason only. When your name’s been a by-word for quality for six generations, you tend to be very picky about the clothes wearing your label.

Dr. Martens classic boots & shoes

http://store.drmartens.co.uk/c-43-vintage.aspx?utm_source=homepage&utm_medium=tout&utm_content=vintage-collection&utm_campaign=10212010

These are a direct replica of the very first boots to roll off the production line on 1 April 1960, handcrafted in the original factory (Wollaston, Northamptonshire, England) by cobblers using the original construction techniques. The product, made on the original 59 last, features narrower horizontal tread bars, criss-crossed coring bars, a darker sole, a storm welt bound together on the lateral side, small indentations left on the welt by the original stitching machine, no top collar binding and runs into the eye stay above the top eyelet. This is where it all began.

Material
A reissue of the original Dr. Martens classic leather. It is durable, with a smooth finish.

Construction
This is a Goodyear-welted product. The upper and sole are sewn together, not merely glued, like many footwear constructions. This, together with our Z welt-stitch and heat-sealing process, makes it unique to Dr. Martens.

Sole
The original Dr. Martens air-cushioned sole, providing underfoot comfort and durability since 1960. It is oil- and fat-resistant, tough and offers good abrasion and slip resistance. http://store.drmartens.co.uk

Triggerfish Funky Slippers

Uber cool indoor shoes, classic and contemporary design

The mens slippers market has never quite mastered the cool factor pined for by the new age man... that is until now.
Triggerfish is a new range of loungewear for men who like to keep their cool wherever they are.

Mancunian rocker Liam Gallagher is already a fan of the brand having order a bespoke pair from Middleton and in turn providing a great style icon that will surely boost the reputation of the label which launches this September at Top Drawer.

Triggerfish are also pioneering to help save the British High Street and not least of all with their alignment with British production, as the shoes are made in one of the last British factories in Leicstershire. Middleton is a supporter of the independent store too and is resigned to the fact that her new funky slippers will not fall into the hands of just any old multiple:

John Lobb Ltd - Hand Made Boots

The original John Lobb was a lame Cornish farmboy whose mastery of the Gentle Craft of last and awl brought him golden awards in the Great International Exhibitions of Victorian times. He became the proud holder of a Royal Warrant as Bootmaker to Edward, Prince of Wales. The Prince, as King Edward VII, was to give his name to a whirling Edwardian era of opulence and splendour; an era in which Lobb shoes became a synonym for quality and elegance.

Norman Walsh - Cool Trainers

Norman Walsh began making athletics footwear upon leaving school in 1945 at the age of fourteen. His name became known by many top professional athletes around the world and in 1961 he founded Norman Walsh Footwear, occupying part of his father’s shoe repair shop.

It is estimated that Norman’s family have been involved in footwear since the late 1800’s. His father made and repaired clogs for the local mill workers. Initially Norman worked alone, sometimes up to 80 hours a week in order to deal with the high demand for his footwear.

Norman Walsh footwear has continued to grow steadily. The brand is now recognised within the exclusive designer footwear market and is receiving excellent success in Europe and the Far East, with products being placed in exclusive retailers and obviously a cult following in Japan.

In addition we are recognised as the leading brand in the UK for off road performance and hill running footwear. The company has invested in worldwide trademark registration of its brand and is the last true British Athletic Footwear Company.
