"Originally named Midland Hosiery Mills and established as a ladies' hosiery factory, it would be some years before the Pantherella brand was to evolve.
Pantherella has always bucked the trend, from its heyday in 1937 when its competitors were churning out bulky, bland men's socks, with very little in the way of choice, let alone comfort.
Undaunted, and despite the high costs, Louis eventually persuaded local machine makers P.A. Bentley to make a special sock machine; this fierce perseverance would pay dividends later when Pantherella's competitors finally caught on. But by this time, Pantherella had set a standard of excellence second to none.
So great was the achievement in persuading men to move to his much more desirable lightweight socks, that Louis decided to cease production of his original ladies' stockings in 1952. However, decades later Pantherella would re-launch a ladies' collection, to coincide with the 60th Anniversary of the Pantherella brand name in 2005.
From day one, Louis Goldschmidt realised that seamless products were the future, be it the fully fashioned socks on the very first Bentley machines, to the ultimate hand linked toe seam that Pantherella is famous for. The company has never shied away from setting precedents; when others have turned to cheaper alternatives, Pantherella have held firm in their beliefs.
Pantherella's philosophy of Quality, Variety, Value for Money still rings true today. Our collections have advanced in leaps and bounds since the early days of Louis' basic ribbed socks.
Louis Goldschmidt used his long-established network of contacts in Europe to develop his export market and by the late 40s the company was exporting to North America. In 1952, the Australian market was opened and exports grew to a staggering 75% of production.
Today, Pantherella socks can be purchased from some of the most exclusive outlets in major cities worldwide.
Louis Goldschmidt's philosophy is maintained to this day by our dedicated and skilled workforce. The factory still manufactures exclusively from its original site, with generations of employees contributing to the unique make-up and heritage of the brand.
Today, with investment in brand spanking new sock machines, Pantherella are determined to stay strides ahead of the competition and the many reproductions from overseas!"
