In 1907, James’s Great Grandfather, George H Laxton and Mr Gordon Holmes formed a spinning company by the name Holmes Laxton & Co combining Laxtons technical know how and Holmes financial expertise.
The company survived two world wars and in 1954 James’s Grandfather, also George Laxton, invested in new machinery and established Prospect Mills in Keighley. In 1959 James’s Father, John Laxton, joined the company and was later joined by Ian Crawford. The company subsequently changed its name to Laxton Crawford Ltd in 1978 and became one of the biggest fancy yarn spinning mills in Europe.
After a number of years processing almost all our products outside of the UK, we are proud to have brought all our manufacturing back into Yorkshire. With countless examples of the UK’s textile production moving to Eastern Europe and Asia over the last two decades, Laxtons have bucked the trend and invested in state of the art technology in our new production unit in Guiseley, West Yorkshire.
Bringing manufacturing back to the UK also has huge environmental benefits as we are no longer shipping raw materials around the world. Coupled with the utilisation of as many home produced components as possible substantially reduces our carbon footprint. UK production allows us to give an improved service with reduced lead times, better management, and a greater control of raw materials and quality.
The investment in the new specialist fancy yarn machine, one of only a handful in the world, means we can combine different spinning technologies which in turn supports our diversification into new markets.
