British Ceramic Tiles
Today, most of the ceramic tiles sold in Britain are imported. We aim to change this by producing better quality, better value ceramic tiles that are specifically designed to fulfill the tiling needs of the UK market. British Ceramic Tile has invested over £40 million in production equipment to enable us to create high quality and beautifully designed tiles efficiently and at competitive prices.
Our manufacturing process already uses 20% less energy to produce tiles than the average for our industry. We are constantly striving to improve our efficiency through the innovative use of new materials and taking steps to make our processes even more efficient. The raw materials that make up ceramic tiles are heavy and the financial and environmental expenses associated with moving them around are high. As we manufacture here in the UK, adjacent to our raw materials, this has enabled us to significantly reduce our energy use in transportation and allows us to offer better value for money to our customers than most of our competitors.

Thomas Crapper & Co. - Sanitary Engineers
By the 1880's, Crapper & Co.'s reputation was such that they were invited to supply the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) at Sandringham. Subsequently, Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey all benefited from Crapper goods and services. Today, the Crapper manhole covers in the Abbey are popular for brass rubbings! Crapper & Co. remained by Royal Appointment to Edward when he became king and was also warranted by George V, as Prince of Wales and once again as king. Thomas Crapper died in 1910 and was buried near the grave of the cricketer, W.G. Grace, in Elmers End Cemetery. The company continued under the guidance of his old partner Robert M. Wharam, his son Robert G. Wharam and Mr. Crapper's nephew George Crapper. However by the late 1950s, after the demise of the original partners, it was evident to Robert G. Wharam that with no Crappers or Wharams left to run the business, the sale of the company was becoming inevitable. In addition, perhaps people cared little for quality and tradition during that period. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
H&E Smith Ltd -- Luxury and Quality Ceramic Tiles
Since 1926 H&E Smith have manufactured only the finest quality traditional English ceramic wall tiles in Stoke-on-Trent, for use in a myriad of settings. We still do the same today.
Manufacturing techniques and manually and semi-automatically operated machinery ensure production of a genuine traditional twice-fired tile, made the same way as years gone by.
2003 saw the start of a vast re-furbishment programme by the London Underground and since the company had already supplied heritage style tiles in the previous decade for several stations, we were again requested to develop special colour glazes and tiles to match the existing designs of 100 years ago. |
2004-2005 saw a positive response to our products and we have supplied several stations with tiles to match the original heritage specifications. Many of these are overseen by ‘English Heritage’ which is an organisation concerned for the preservation and conservation of the original aspects of these prestigious projects.

Barber Wilsons & Co Ltd - Luxury Taps and water fittings
Barber Wilsons is the oldest independent, family owned company manufacturing water fittings in the UK with 100 years of experience.
Barber Wilsons & Company Limited manufactures brass water fittings suitable for fitment in all domestic and semi-industrial locations. Our range of products is amongst the widest in the industry. We can and do offer a bespoke manufacturing service to all our customers. This sets Barber Wilsons & Co apart from all other tap manufacturers as we can work with you to achieve the perfect fit for your project. We also offer a bespoke manufacturing service to your exact requirements. A perfect example of this is the work we undertook in the recent refurbishment of Claridges Hotel, London where our fittings were used throughout. One of the hotel wings was constructed at the height of the Art Décoratif (Art Deco) period of the 1930's with many unusual features. Our expertise in reproducing the taps to the original designs along with the refurbishment of existing equipment helped preserve this unique style for many to enjoy.
Our range of self-closing non-concussive taps is made to our own design dating back to the 1920's. The design is so durable that we have seen little point in trying to improve a sound design. The product range, encompassing all forms of tap from pillar valves through to stopcocks, is perfectly suited to applications where water saving coupled with ease of operation is required. Also the foot operated or knee operated stopcocks are essential where the user should not contaminate their hands after washing.
Our range of in-house manufactured ceramic disk headworks, when fitted to our taps and mixers, make the fittings ideally suited for persons with limited ability to operate the valve. Traditionally these are long 6" lever operated, such as used by surgeons in operating theatres to "scrub up". We supply the fittings with a shortened 3" lever that allows operation without need for gripping. Our hospital range of fittings are both durable and stylish withstanding the rigours of very high usage without deterioration.
Our range of self-closing taps and quarter turn ceramic disk taps are most suitable for use by disabled or elderly persons.
Modernisation of the machine shop continues with the introduction of a CNC turning centre, which will work unattended for up to two days if required, and we are constantly looking at new designs and methods of improving quality and volume. Export markets exporting to the USA are increasing and we are the sole surviving independent family run business in our industry.

W T Knowles & Sons Ltd
The company was founded in 1906 by Walter Thomas Knowles, becoming a limited company in 1926. Walter's sons joined the business in the 1920's and in the 1950's they took the reins. About this time, the third generation joined the company and they took control in the 1970's. Now the company is run by the fourth generation.
During World War 2, W T Knowles & Sons Ltd won many contracts with the MOD for draining airfields. Shortly after the war there were around eighty individual clay pipe manufacturers, today there are only three.
The company still has six down draught beehive kilns which produce both glazed and unglazed goods and employs a workforce of around 50 people. Many of the traditional moulding techniques are still being used today.
Why use clay?
Clay is a natural product, and as such it can return to the environment without harm. It is unaffected by most chemicals, it is inert and lasts for hundreds of years.Clay pipes have been used for drainage for thousands of years but clay is also beneficial for chimney pots and flue liners. Clay is extremely resilient, resistant to rust, corrosion and is fireproof. Unlike metal, clay chimney pots and liners do not conduct electricity, so if lightening strikes, it is unlikely to facilitate damage to buildings
