Swaledale Woollens

Swaledale Woollens was founded in Muker, North Yorkshire over 30 years ago by villagers reviving the old cottage industry of knitting. Swaledale Woollens is now owned and run by Kathleen Hird who carries on using local Swaledale and Wensleydale wool for the knitwear. We have a wide range of high quality woollen knitwear, such as Sweaters, Cardigans, Hats, Rugs, Shawls, Scarves and Socks. We also stock sheepskin slippers and gloves. What better choice could there be for a quality and unique, hand-crafted woollen gift for yourself, friends and family?

Our wool comes from local sheep whose wool is sent to Lanark Mill in southern Scotland for washing and combing before spinning and finishing according to the Soil Association's strict guidelines. Lanark Mill produces ethical, environmentally friendly yarn by using renewable energy from its own hydro-electricity plant. This yarn, which originates from our rare bread Wensleydale and Swaledale sheep, is then used to hand-craft our sweaters, cardigans, hats, socks and can even be bought in balls for knitting your own designs.

Kutzi Designer Socks

Kutzi is the Registered name of an exciting new brand of English socks that are designed, as they say ... ‘the socks to be seen in’ ...

Following a visit to Florence in Italy and a subsequent failed search for similar socks in England, I decided to design and manufacture a range of high quality, exciting, colourful, bright and stylish socks – made in England, by Kutzi.

All our socks are knitted using the best yarns. Our initial range of men’s socks uses soft two fold combed cotton, backed by Lycra coated nylon, for great comfort and fit.

The new spring ranges of Women’s Socks and Golf Socks will use the same yarns. For the autumn, we will introduce a small range of woollen socks.
The leg length was always an issue as the longer leg requested inevitably caused cost to rise. But now, as we are a much smaller operation, we can afford to knit socks with proper leg lengths to prevent that unsightly leg being exposed when sitting cross legged. We also knit some of the patterns in a knee length, for the ultimate in stylish socks.

Pantherella Socks

"Originally named Midland Hosiery Mills and established as a ladies' hosiery factory, it would be some years before the Pantherella brand was to evolve.

Pantherella has always bucked the trend, from its heyday in 1937 when its competitors were churning out bulky, bland men's socks, with very little in the way of choice, let alone comfort.

Undaunted, and despite the high costs, Louis eventually persuaded local machine makers P.A. Bentley to make a special sock machine; this fierce perseverance would pay dividends later when Pantherella's competitors finally caught on. But by this time, Pantherella had set a standard of excellence second to none.

So great was the achievement in persuading men to move to his much more desirable lightweight socks, that Louis decided to cease production of his original ladies' stockings in 1952. However, decades later Pantherella would re-launch a ladies' collection, to coincide with the 60th Anniversary of the Pantherella brand name in 2005.

From day one, Louis Goldschmidt realised that seamless products were the future, be it the fully fashioned socks on the very first Bentley machines, to the ultimate hand linked toe seam that Pantherella is famous for. The company has never shied away from setting precedents; when others have turned to cheaper alternatives, Pantherella have held firm in their beliefs.

Pantherella's philosophy of Quality, Variety, Value for Money still rings true today. Our collections have advanced in leaps and bounds since the early days of Louis' basic ribbed socks.

Louis Goldschmidt used his long-established network of contacts in Europe to develop his export market and by the late 40s the company was exporting to North America. In 1952, the Australian market was opened and exports grew to a staggering 75% of production.
Today, Pantherella socks can be purchased from some of the most exclusive outlets in major cities worldwide.

Louis Goldschmidt's philosophy is maintained to this day by our dedicated and skilled workforce. The factory still manufactures exclusively from its original site, with generations of employees contributing to the unique make-up and heritage of the brand.

Today, with investment in brand spanking new sock machines, Pantherella are determined to stay strides ahead of the competition and the many reproductions from overseas!"
