Mathmos - Lamps

Lava lamps
The original lava lamps invented by the founder of Mathmos Edward Craven-Walker in 1963
The lava lamp or” Astro lamp” as it was then called captured the public’s imagination and became one of the defining products of the 1960s. It appeared in many films and broadcasts of the time including the cult TV series The Prisoner.

The product was manufactured in Poole, Dorset, as it still is today, and sold all over the world in large numbers under the original company name of Crestworth. Mr Walker took out world wide patents and made royalty deals with a number of overseas companies to manufacture and sell his invention in their countries for the duration of the patents.

Stoves - UK cooker manufacturer

Half of UK consumers are baffled when it comes to buying ‘British’ and two-thirds (67%) want an official seal of approval to show products made in Britain, while half (52%) think British brands should bring manufacturing back to the UK, according to new research by leading UK cooker manufacturer Stoves.
Staggeringly, half (48%) of Brits surveyed* admitted confusion about which brands could still claim to be made in Britain, with international takeovers and moves towards Far Eastern production all contributing to an increasingly puzzled landscape.
Now in response, UK cooker manufacturer Stoves has teamed up with independent Made in Britain champions, BuyBritish.co.uk, to launch a campaign for increased transparency, asking for a standardised ‘Made In Britain’ marque to be used on British-made products.
With more than a third of people questioned stating they would buy British if it was easier to identify authentic made in Britain products and 55% claiming that supporting UK manufacture and jobs is their main incentive to buy British, Stoves and BuyBritish.co.uk hope the marque will be adopted by the UK manufacturing industry as a whole.
The findings revealed that 36% of people claim to buy British whenever they can, but when probed about the Britishness of some of the UK’s most iconic consumer goods, it is clear that the public is holding on to out-of-date misconceptions as to what brands are still 100% British made.
40% think HP Sauce (Netherlands) is British-made while 43% think the same of Royal Doulton which although designed in the UK is now manufactured in the Far East. Almost a third (32%) rate Dyson as a truly British brand despite production now taking place in Malaysia and almost a quarter (23%) stand by Raleigh when in fact it shifted production to the Far East in 2003.
With 67% of people agreeing that truly British brands should carry a recognised kitemark, Stoves has drafted in the help of the UK’s design undergraduates to create a seal of approval to help consumers in their purchasing choices.
The results of the nationwide competition will be revealed in June 2011 and will see the winning student’s design displayed on Stoves products, marketing material, and website. It will also be available as a download for all UK manufactured brands, with Stoves and BuyBritish.co.uk hoping that businesses large and small will back the campaign.
Denver Hewlett, chief executive of Stoves, said: “There is clearly an appetite out there for made in Britain products but the confusion lies in identifying what products are manufactured in the UK. A standard industry marque would certainly help the public in their purchasing decisions and it is something we intend to use on all of our Made in Britain products as a result of this campaign.”
The campaign is being backed by Shaun Woodward, MP for St Helens the constituency where Stoves’ head office and factory is based. He said: “British manufacture is essential to our economy and has the potential to play a vital role in the UK’s economic recovery. It is fantastic to see a major company such as Stoves take the lead in launching a Made in Britain seal of approval on behalf of the country’s manufacturers. There is clear consumer demand for products and goods made in this country and this campaign will help make that purchasing decision even easier. The development of a Made in Britain seal of approval is an extremely worthwhile initiative and I am delighted to lend my support to this cause.”

Later improvements included the addition of a pressing area and the first Corby trouser press was launched. Corby of Windsor continues to make our trouser presses, and many other products, at our UK headquarters in Huddersfield. It is our intention to support the British manufacturing industry whilst ensuring high standards of craftsmanship and quality are always adhered to.

Rega Research Ltd - Turntables & HIFI

Excellent build quality, reliability and ease of use combine to make a product which will offer a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Omitting all the usual gimmicks allows us to concentrate the manufacturing costs on the high quality parts necessary to reproduce records accurately.

Using a manual speed change rather than an automatic mechanism, eliminates speed inconsistencies and reduces wear of the drive belt. The money we save is spent across the design including a new hand assembled RB101 tonearm, precision main bearing, phenolic resin platter and a high quality low vibration motor which would normally be used on a turntable costing two or three times the amount.

The minimalist design of the Rega RP1 and the use of extremely high quality components ensure that this turntable will last for many years. The RP1 is the first in a new generation of Rega turntables offering far greater performance than their predecessors.

We are confident the performance of this amazing new product will impress you. Rest assured the only thing entry level about the RP1 is the price !

The all new completely British-made RP1

Kudos loudspeakers

The Kudos range of loudspeakers are designed with the overriding principle of allowing our customers to enjoy their music as much as possible, with the best engineered product at a given price point. A simple statement to make, but one which involves a lot of hard work to achieve, especially as we are our own worst critics and never release a product until we are fully satisfied with it.

A great many of the hi-fi loudspeakers on the market today utilise mass-produced components and styling techniques to make them appear more impressive and to hit key price points. This has unfortunately become a common practise and can lead to quality and consistency issues, severely compromising the end product. Instead, we at Kudos use traditional well-proven engineering techniques, the highest quality components, and the time-honoured method of voicing our loudspeaker by ear to produce inspiring results.

Some may wonder why not use a more complex solution but we prefer to follow an old an well proven piece of advice put forward by a Franciscan Friar and logician, William of Occam - entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem. This statement is often known as “Occam’s Razor” and translates as “entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity” – we take this to mean “keep it as simple as can be, but do it as well as you can”.

Harbeth Loudspeakers

Our Harbeth factory is located in Lindfield, near Haywards Heath, in West Sussex (south of London), England is a mediaeval village with a unique range of houses dating from about 1300, all lived-in and beautifully preserved. The population is about 3,000 and we have a strong community spirit which is intimately bound up with what we do at Harbeth.

Unusually for such a picturesque location, there is a small yet discrete industrial estate on the edge of the village, bordering open fields, where you will find Harbeth. One of Lindfield's claims to fame is that in the year 1066, King Harold's archers made use of the yew trees of the village on their way to the Battle of Hastings. Nearly 1000 years later the tree is still thriving in what is now a wonderfully peaceful, calming little village.

The factory is the hub of the international Harbeth operation. The main production line sees batches of loudspeakers assembled by hand each day. One day it may be P3s, the next Monitor 30s, and the next the HL5. By limiting manufacture to individual batches, it is possible to maintin much tighter quality controls.

One area of the factory is concerned with testing - every drive unit is measured and pair-matched before assembly. Each crossover board is carefully checked and tested using computer-controlled equipment. Every finished speaker is again tested before shipment to ensure it leaves the factory in perfect condition. Careful packing, in specially-designed boxes, ensures a safe journey to the final customer.

Dualit Domestic Electrical products

Dualit produces a range of kitchen and home appliances which remain firmly rooted in the values Max set out for the company in 1945. It is run by Max’s son, Leslie and is one of a handful of successful, independently-owned British manufacturers. Reliable, well-engineered products remain at the heart of the company and there is an instantly recognisable – and now nostalgically retro – Dualit aesthetic which can be traced back to Max’s first toaster designs in the 1950s.

One constant – an ability to embrace change – has seen the company revolutionise its manufacturing capability without compromising on quality and reliability. The innovative, entrepreneurial spirit that was so much a part of Max, is echoed in Leslie and now his son Alex who sit firmly in the product development driving seat.
The company continues to produce some of it's toasters and electrical products in the UK. Dualit’s classic toasters are a design icon. Built for commercial use, they have since won numerous consumer accolades and come in a range of variants, sizes and colours.

Engineered to produce the best toast in the world, Dualit toasters are still built by hand in the UK, with the assembler’s stamp on every base plate. So whether you’re a toast aficionado at home, or a professional caterer needing to produce 80 toasted sandwiches an hour, we can guarantee that one of our Dualit toasters will be perfect for you.
