Brady Bags and cases

The first Brady brothers were John and Albert who in about 1877 started making leather gun cases in Price Street, Birmingham. Brady moved their manufacturing operations from Halesowen and integrated production with Jeffries Saddlery, using the skills synonymous with the leather industry based in Walsall.

Like all Brady bags the materials and components are of the finest quality, the buckles and components are solid brass, webbing is best quality heavy cotton and the leather used for the bag is an English saddlery leather which is both strong and supple and has a waterproof finish to give maximum protection and years of hard wear. Made in England in the Brady factory by craftsmen and women using original patterns and methods of construction.

Boss & Co Gunmakers Ltd

Whilst many makers of fine English shotguns can trace their ancestry back a considerable number of years, Boss & Co can claim to be one of the longest established, dating back to 1773 when William Boss began his gunmaking apprenticeship in Birmingham.
In the late 18th century, William Boss moved to London to work for Joseph Manton, and his son Thomas Boss (1790 – 1857) followed in his father’s footsteps to serve his apprenticeship under the great master himself.
Completing his apprenticeship in 1812, Thomas Boss set up business and moved to the prestigious address 73 St James' Street, which was synonymous with Boss & Co in the 19th century. From the outset, Thomas Boss only produced one quality of gun, the best, and this policy has continued through to the present day with Boss & Co being the “builders of best guns only”.

Atkin Grant and Lang

Welcome to Atkin Grant & Lang. We are bespoke English gun makers in the classic London tradition, with our workshop on the premises and our full time craftsmen producing best quality sporting shotguns and double rifles to order, for a discerning clientele who demand the best.

Established in 1821, when the oldest of our founders, Joseph Lang, opened his doors to the public in Haymarket, we still uphold the best traditions of London gun making. When you order a gun or rifle from Atkin Grant & Lang, you speak to the owner of the company. AGL is not part of a wider conglomerate; our Managing Director, Diggory Hadoke, owns the company and handles all aspects of service personally.

Our production models include the classic Henry Atkin ‘1909 model’ self-opening side-lock ejector; the highest development of Beesley’s classic 1880 spring cocking action. We also produce conventional Atkin sidelocks in all gauges from 12-bore to 28-bore. Best boxlocks continue to be made to order and are occasionally available from stock.

Joseph Lang double rifles are produced on a bespoke basis and are occasionally available from stock. We favor a back-action side-lock for its strength, reliability and crisp trigger pulls. Boxlock double rifles in ‘Colonial Quality’ designed for the professional hunter, in the classic English tradition of the 1920s and 1930s workhorses we produced for Africa and India, will again be available in 2012, in .470 and .375, on scaled actions.

James Purdey & Sons Ltd

When you take delivery of your new gun from us, you can be assured it is every bit a Purdey. Every part of a Purdey is machined and then hand-worked and finished in our factory in West London. Only the highest quality materials are used, with all load-bearing parts being made from certified forgings.
Purdey was established in London in 1814, the year before the battle of Waterloo. The founder, James Purdey, had previously worked as head stocker for Joseph Manton, the foremost gunmaker of his time. Purdey set up his gun making business in Princes Street and soon moved to Manton's former premises in Oxford Street in 1826. As early as 1838, Queen Victoria is recorded as having bought a pair of Purdey pistols.
James Purdey the Younger took over the running of the company from his father in 1858. Over his lifetime there was rapid change and development in the design of guns and rifles, essentially moving from muzzle loading flintlocks in the 1820's to breech loading hammerless ejectors by the 1880's. James the Younger was always at the forefront of advances in the design and building of his guns and rifles, and took out several patents for technical innovations over the years, many of which were adopted by other gunmakers.
The company was granted its first Royal Warrant in 1868 by The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, an honour that has been bestowed on the Managing Director of James Purdey & Sons Ltd by each succeeding Monarch. Today Nigel Beaumont holds the Warrants of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, HRH Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales.
In 1882 the company moved from Oxford Street to the new premises on the corner of South Audley Street and Mount Street, where it remains to this day.

Holland & Holland (Gunsmiths)

The firm was founded by Harris Holland (1806-1896) in the year 1835.

The slim and splendid five-storey red brick Holland & Holland factory, built in 1898 by Henry Holland, may be found in the Harrow Road not far from London’s Paddington Station. It now stands proudly in isolation but continues to serve its purpose for the manufacture of the very finest craft-made guns. The late 1800’s were still in the days of gas lighting hence the need for tall windows and high ceilings to make maximum use of natural light with the engravers always favouring North light.

More than one hundred years later there seems to have been little change other than new windows and a fresh coat of paint. It is not until we look inside that the differences become very evident. Built in the days of overhead shafting and belt-driven machinery, this state-of-the-art Victorian ‘technology’ has now been replaced by the new. Today you will see CAD stations (for computer aided design) used to define the functional detail of every gun down to the most exacting tolerance, and CAM stations (for computer aided manufacture) to generate the thousands of programmes required to drive the latest high-tech machine tools.
