J. G. Glover & Company Ltd (Jumpers & Clothing)

The Glover family have been manufacturing quality wool jumpers and accessories in Leicestershire, England for over 200 years. Starting up as hand frame knitters in the late 18th centenary.

By the mid 1860's Mr Samuel Glover employed a workforce of 26 people and in 1901 his grandson John George Glover went on to established J. G. Glover & Company Ltd.

The company gradually grew as Leicester established itself as a specialist centre of wool knitwear and by the 1950's, when Britain was the largest exporter of woollen textiles in the world; J G Glover was employing over 300 people. Producing quality fully-fashioned knitwear from predominantly natural fibres.

In 1956 the brand Peregrine was established, supplying the striving British wholesale market as well as expanding into the ever-growing overseas market. Exporting Peregrine knitwear into America, Europe and Japan.

When the UK wholesale market began to decline in the 70's due to the introduction of large chain stores, J G Glover was forced into change. Leaving the Brand Peregrine to one side, J.G. Glover went on to manufacturer for all the major chain stores; like BHS and Debenhams under their own private label.

However, by the early 80's Britain's textile market came under attack from cheap overseas imports. Causing many UK manufacturers to close, unable to compete with the low Far East prices. At this stage the UK chain stores were heavily dictating the British Textiles industry. Therefore when they moved their business overseas, Britain's second largest industry collapsed. Resulting in the majority of the British textiles industry closing or moving their production overseas.

Therefore, in 1987 John Glover, the 7th generation of Glovers was forced to sell the family factory and downsize to a more manageable unit. With the objective of exporting quality British knitwear into a niche market that still desired the English look.

In 2003 as the market widened, the brand Peregrine was re-invented, and launched into the 21st centenary with a new range of classic knitwear and accessories. Building on its 200 years of experience, Peregrine mixed traditional British styling and materials with fresh and innovative designs.

Peregrine has now gone on to expand its range, introducing wax and tweed jackets and bags to compliment the wool knitwear. The end result is a diverse and innovative range of unique clothing inspired by its proud family history.

Now eight generations later, all the garments are still made in England from the best Natural fibres to maintain the highest quality.
